California gold diggers-a scene from actual life at the mines, and California emigrants-the last day on the plains : engravings, ca. 1856.

Depicting scenes from early California history, these two sheets are from the illustrated weekly newspaper, Ballou's pictorial drawing-room companion. The weekly which was published in Boston changed its name from Gleason's pictorial in 1855 when the managing editor, Maturin Ballou purchased the paper.
